Now is the time to fight

It's time to stand up and take action.
As business owners, you may never again get this opportunity to reset your business strategy and emerge from this crisis stronger, more focused and with greater clarity about your business's direction.
Be the victor not the victim!

7 Tips for managing your business during Covid-19

Whether you are a business owner or team member it’s important to maintain a positive outlook.  Look for small wins throughout every day and wash your hands.

The business community will need change down a gear for the short term and adjust their forecasts and goals accordingly. If your marketplace has suddenly changed, you must change with it. Forecasts for revenue, sales targets, expenses and profits will all need to be reviewed and reset to remain relevant. The current crisis does not reduce the importance of having clear achievable goals to keep you focussed and motivated. Forget your previous goals (for now) and reset your forward projections to avoid feeling discouraged and defeated.

This goes without saying, but still needs to be said. Look to reduce non-essential expenditures and reserve those funds for maintaining your operations and your team, but keep your marketing going. Your marketing strategy may need to change but you will still need to remain visible to your marketplace. Staying visible will demonstrate resilience and guidance to your customers and prospects. Your messaging may change but stay visible.

We are entering a new economic cycle. An economic winter after a long hot summer. Spring will come, eventually, and when it does, we need to have weeded our business gardens and nourished our teams.

If you are working from home or just practicing social distancing in the workplace stay connected to your teams and fellow workers. Schedule online face-to-face catchups (not just an email or text) to occur on a regular basis. I suggest twice daily.

Make sure everyone has something to do. Whether its billable work or catching up on some admin or professional or personal development, keep everyone engaged and busy. Don’t waste the opportunity to strengthen your business systems and improve team skills if your marketplace slows down. Brainstorm on systems and processes that need to be documented. Find inspiring and educational Podcasts or videos and set challenges for your team to listen/watch them. Keep a record and make a game of it.

What you do and how you act is always reflected throughout your business. Be a leader. Stay calm. Be rational. Show compassion to those who are directly affected by illness or are experiencing hardships or anxiety. Avoid conveying a scarcity mentality. This is your time to shine as a leader.

Grants and programs

The Queensland Government will release Round 2 of their Covid-19 Small Business Adaption Grant Program on 1 July 2020.

Round 1 was released in late May 2020 and was over subscribed and closed within just a couple of days.

The available grant amount is a minimum of $2,000 and up to a maximum of $10,000 per eligible small or micro business.

The objective of this program is to support small businesses subject to closure or highly impacted by the coronavirus (COVID-19) shutdown restrictions announced by the Queensland Government, to adapt and sustain their operations, and build resilience.

The program aims to see small and micro businesses:

  • prepare for the safe resumption of trading in the post COVID-19 recovery
  • access digital technologies to rebuild business operations and transition to a new way of doing business
  • respond to online opportunities, where possible, to sustain employment and maintain potential for longer-term growth
  • upskill and reskill business owners and staff to benefit from new technologies or business models
  • embrace business diversification to adapt and sustain operations
  • create or retain employment.
